Definition

A conversion is the next useful action for that page.

A destination article may need to earn a room-page visit. A room page may need to start a date search. An offer page may need to explain terms before handing the guest to availability. Treating all sessions against one booking rate hides these different jobs.

Map a small set of page groups and define the action that indicates qualified movement. This creates a diagnostic funnel without forcing every visitor into the same path.

Content

Make room differences and restrictions easy to understand.

Guests compare space, beds, views, accessibility, included services, cancellation and total cost. If the property describes every room with the same adjectives, it creates work for the guest. Use structured differences, accurate imagery and practical “best for” guidance.

Do the same for rates and packages. Explain inclusions and restrictions in plain language before checkout. The CMA’s hotel-booking work highlights hidden charges and misleading pressure patterns; transparent value is a safer and more credible direct-booking strategy.

Use images to prove meaningful room differences, not repeat the same generic view.
Mobile

Design for thumbs, interruptions and small screens.

Keep the room name, key differences, total price context and primary action readable without precision tapping. Avoid sticky elements that cover policy or checkout content. Preserve visible focus and keyboard operation, and test text reflow at zoom.

WCAG 2.2 applies across devices and recommends current accessibility practice; its Level AA minimum pointer target criterion is 24 by 24 CSS pixels, with defined exceptions. Treat that as a floor, not a luxury-hotel design target. Important booking controls usually benefit from more generous space.

Performance

Protect the first meaningful view and every interaction after it.

Large galleries, video backgrounds, consent tools and booking widgets can compete for the first screen. Reserve image dimensions, deliver appropriately sized media and delay non-essential code. Measure real users by page group and device.

Google currently defines good Core Web Vitals as LCP within 2.5 seconds, INP below 200 milliseconds and CLS below 0.1. Meeting those thresholds does not guarantee bookings, but poor loading, response or stability can prevent guests from using the page you worked to rank.

Continuity

Audit the booking engine as part of the same journey.

Look for lost dates, different branding, unexpected language, unreadable rate terms, inaccessible controls, session expiry and price changes without explanation. Capture errors and zero-result searches. A handoff that technically opens is not necessarily a handoff that converts.

Optimisation

Prioritise by evidence, impact and implementation risk.

Write each improvement as a hypothesis: observed friction, proposed change, expected behaviour, primary measure and guardrail. Start with defects and missing information before stylistic experiments. Review search visibility and booking quality alongside conversion so a short-term uplift does not damage discovery or guest trust.
